Tutorial #9: Red Eye - Make-up, Screencap Renovation, and Prominent Foreground Object
A tutorial covering some basic make-up techniques I use, creating a sharper looking base from a screencap, and making the foreground object more prominent. Yep. All that rolled into one lil' icon. Mwah. Haha. Anyway, take a gander and tell me what you think. This is for PS7, but may be translatable.

Ok, so this might get a little long, so I'll apologize ahead of time.
Here's the base I used, a Red Eye screencap of Rachel McAdams by
blooms. I didn't use 100x100, I used 100x89.

The first thing I did was duplicate the base layer and set it to Screen, 100% opacity. Sharpen it twice, and do the blur-the-skin thing.

For almost all screencaps, that's basically a necessity because most screencaps are very dark. Next I made a Channel Mixer Adjustment Layer and checked the box that says Monochrome. I set the layer to Overlay, 100% opacity. This is something I do on ALL my icons, because it gives them a more realistic and sharper look.

Next I made a Color Balance Adjustment Layer. I set Midtones at Cyan -35Highlights at Yellow -27, and Shadows at Blue +35</b>. This is another step I use on almost all my icons.

Now that our base is prepped, let's do some makeup. Ok, I started with eyeshadow. I recommend zooming in real close for this. I took a yellowish color (around #DBD025) and started coloring her eyelids with a basic brush on a new layer. I set that layer to Color. Then I lowered the opacity to 84% because it was a little too bright for my tastes.

Now something I've noticed most designers don't do - blush. I think it adds a nice effect because screencaps cause the actresses to lose that shimmer. xD Wow, I do sound stupid. Anyway, I zoomed in real close and made a new layer. I took a pinkish tone (around #EF44A5) and drew with a big, soft brush on her cheek. I put it on Color. You'll notice it's quite ugly and prominent. Well, we'll fix that! I think made a Layer Mask and used a big plain brush at a low opacity and just masked some of it off. Almost all of your mask should be black and grey.

Then I took a small, star like brush (a default) and just blended the edges (still on the Layer Mask!) It should look something like this:

Pretty, eh? I'm so sorry if that's confusing. I wasn't sure how to explain it. xD Now for the lipstick. I took a deep red (around #A61423) and colored over her lips with a small brush on a new layer. I set it to Color again. Now it's a little too prominent. So I set it to 79% opacity.

Now we're going to make Rachel stick out more than the stupid dude in the background. First, I made a selection around Rachel.

I made a new layer and flood filled it with #89122B and set it to Lighten. This makes it seem more..I don't know..unimportant. xD Haha.

Then I simply added text, and you're done! I hope that wasn't too confusing. xD

If you have any questions, please ask. I can imagine getting confused with my crappy explaining skills. xD
